Checking some relays and need to know what is the proper way to test ground.

OK so the icon on your multimeter is most likely one of three types. It could be a musical note, an Ohm symbol (which looks like a horseshoe), or it could just say continuity.
Choose whichever one of these you have on your meter. Ground one of the test leads to some bare metal or the negative post of the battery and then touch the other test lead to whatever you want to check for ground. If you have an Ohm symbol then you may want to touch the two leads together before you start and this will let you see what your meter should read when you have a good ground when performing the test I outlined above.
A trip to www.the12volt.com (http://www.the12volt.com) might not be a bad idea for you as well. There is a ton of good info on 12 volt electrical systems over there.
