Theres a 318 forsale, runs and everything but im thinking about swaping another engine in it.

How complicated would it be just to install a 328/325 motor with a 5speed transmission?

Any pointers on where i should research or what i should read?

The only experience i have when it comes to swaps is when i did one on my 240sx, the 5pseed conversion and everything was a breeze.

What about a 1jz swap?

Im just doing research because i want a weekend car i could abuse and this opportunity came up.

If the car was free, and in solid shape... I would take it. You could buy a crashed M3 and swap the parts onto your 318 chasis for less than buying a complete M3 in very good shape. BUT only if you do the work yourself. The 325 and 318 have same transmission. You are better off swapping to the 6 cylinder driveshaft, diff, and half shafts if you want to make it a performance car you want to beat on.
I say keep it 318, and gut the SHT out of it, like I did to mine. You will be very surprised as to how well the car handles. I dare say it's a real beast in the corners. Sure, not in a straight line. But then, when was the last time you did 120 MPH through a canyon? :D
Might be better to wait for a good deal on a 325. Less stuff to swap over in the long run.
Plus, you can keep the 318 M42 motor in, and spend all your money on the wheels, tires and suspension first. All of that stuff is swappable to other E36's for the most part.
How far are you going to go on the chassis, as far as lightening?
Are you going to track it in the future? Want to resell it in the future?
I did stuff to my car that will make it utterly worthless if I want to sell it. :(
But I love it :D Even with the M42.
Good luck :D You have a ton of options.
