View Full Version : Coolant Temp in the red!

So I was driving to work today, and as I was going I smelled something odd. It's cold and I had my heater on, so I figured it was just that since it usually smells weird.

But then I heard the beep, I checked my dashboard and it said COOLANT TEMP. I looked at my temperature gauge and it was in the red!

I shut the car down mid roll and coasted into the nearest parking lot fearing the worst, popped the hood, and there was no smoke at all. I turned it on real quickly, and the temperature stayed right in the middle where it should be.

After that, I opened the coolant reservoir slowly, and there was no coolant in it. At all. On the other side of the car, it had all spilled out right behind the passenger side front wheel. I went and bought a couple of gallons of water and put one in because that's all I had, and it's been fine since, but I'm worried something might happen again and I may not be so lucky. Anybody know what the deal is?

Also, I searched and couldn't find anything that appeared to be the same thread, which is why I posted a new one.

Sounds like your waterpump gasket is leaking. Or possibly those 2 pipes that go from the front to the back(can't remember the correct name), maybe one of the rings has deteriorated and coming out the front of the engine from the valley pan.

Most likely you will end up having the exact same problem until you fix whatever is leaking...

or the tstat got stuck

But how would that explain the leak?

I actually had a feeling it was the thermostat just because it was a one time thing and the temperature immediately dropped back down. And when I put the water in, I watched under the car for a good few minutes and didn't see any leaks... I know I leak a bit of coolant, but nothing drastic and there was no change after my "event."

Hum, that's true. I forgot the overflow hose went onto the PS near the wheel! Hopefully a stuck thermo is the answer!
