So I acquired an 18 button OBC for free when i bought my M3 but dont know if it works for sure. My M3 has an 11 button OBC and thats all i really want anyway, but its pretty messed up and the screen is pretty much shot, so I want to sell the 18 button (or trade it for a working 11 button).

The problem is, I cant just go selling or trading something that im not positive works 100%. So i had the bright idea to test it out in my friends 325is, who has an 18 button OBC, so everything will hook up correctly and what not.

If we just unplug his current 18 button OBC, and plug my extra 18 button OBC into his car to check if it works, is that going to screw his car up in any way? Or is it totally safe, and he'll be able to plug his OBC back in and all will be as it was before our little test?

any experience is appreciated.

You won't create any problems swapping them out except he will lose any settings like the clock and possibly the MPG calibration.

The obc isn't a mission critical part. Its only purpose is driver convenience. You can easily drive without one.

Perfect. Thanks.

P.S. - My current OBC seems to reset every time i turn off the car...is that just cuz its f'ed up beyond all repair, or is there something wrong with the car that it wont keep its time/date/whatever...? It just always goes back to "INPUT TIME" the next time i drive my car.
