I am looking at an East Coast 540i/6. I just ran the options list, and I am curious as to what "M Sport Suspension" consists of. Here is the option readout. (attached)

OK, thicker sway bars. What is diff. about the springs? Just stiffer?

Slightly lower ride height than a normal 540. All 6 speeds came with that suspension... Except the Edc equipped m-sports.

Not sure about that one man.

I believe they come with M Technic springs and unique Boge struts/shocks front and rear that are specific to the 540/6. If you pull up a vin from a 540/6 sport it will show you 2 options for the springs and shocks: one variety for normal 540s and another set of different part numbers for the sports.

The M sports and M540s came with EDC and are altogether different again. So actually, 540s had three suspension offerings from the factory.

mtechnic springs are m5 springs. this is the first, out of every thread about what msport suspension means, that anyone has ever said anything about special boge struts. Normal 540s, you mean auto right? because those came with stock springs.

If you go through realoem you will find more spring part numbers for the E34 and "smiths" in the phone book.

The part number for my M5 cross references to only the 3.6 M5.

540 edc and 3.8 M5 euro springs are the same
Mtech springs for my 535 are a completely different part number that applies to many models

^ Take a peek here for more info on the suspensions....

This starts out at the 540 sport (aka 540/6) and then lists 540 M Sport (US model) and M540 Canadian model but does not list the normal 540 auto

Yeah, in ordering new factory struts and rear shocks for our 95 540/6 we (working through Patrick at BMA) had to special order them from Germany. The sport ones according to our VIN and build sheet was not the same as the normal 540.

^ Surprisingly, Patrick at BMA had never run across it either.

"In BMWNA's early 1995 literature the 540i with a 6-speed manual transmission was referred to as the "Sport model" because it had sport seats and an M-Technic (lowered, firmer) suspension. However, in the 1996 literature (published in late 1995) they refer to the 540i with the 6-speed as the "540i manual". The new limited edition car is called the "540i Sport" or "540i M-Sport" ."

This is what I was going on applying the sport term to the 540/6.

M-Technic is then synonymous with 704 M Sport Suspension as printed on the BMW Shipping infor obtained from BMW?

So what I meant was the lets call it '540 manual' doesn't have EDC. The canadian ///M540 and the M540 Sport did..

I wonder what the original 540 manual shocks feel like.. compared to the Billie Sports..

Though they were on mine when I bougth it 4 and 1/2 years ago I can't honestly say I remember the feel but even so they were at that time 11 years old if only with 129,000 miles on them... I wouldn't really expect them to have been representative of the same when brand new..

How do they feel?

There was never any option with the 525 for sport suspension as far as i know. And judging by the picture in your signature, it doesnt look like your 525 is lower than any other stock e34. But i may be wrong.

Now i don't speak for NA cars, but euro cars could be ordered with sport suspension (option 227), on any model. 518i through 535i except the obvious 540i..

And that gives you a lower and firmer ride. Usually recognized on the plastic cap on the top mount which is 80mm(about 3") in diameter. On euro cars atleast. The non sport suspension has a 40mm plastic cap on top.

well bfp is right, U.S. cars didnt come with any sort of suspension upgrades unless it was a 540/6. Euro cars, maybe. His point that his ride height is still 4x4 status leads me to believe as well its still stock.

I saw a black on tan 92 535iSE model that was an auto, and had full M-Tech exterior (skirts, bumps, rear spoiler), but I did not drive it to feel the suspension. My former mechanic's boss picked it up at auction for $3000 (this was about 7 years ago) and I was trying to get my wife to sell her 92 535iA which we were fixing at the time and upgrade to this one, but the dreaded tan interior pooched the deal. We had Black over dove gray and the SE was Black and Tan. We did sell hers for $5k when we knew we were having #2 and she moved into Acura MDX's.

So there were some BMW individuals made for BMW NA. I'd say the Euro's got mostly access to the cheap versions of the E34's whereas the US had mostly nicely equipped or totally equipped versions, cold packages, and a couple SE versions. One of the rare interiors that came with E34's and E28's (the 83 533i) was that burgundy/wine color leather that was really sweet.
