My ussually rock solid M50 will not start. I will give a chronological order of events.
1. The other night (last time I had it out driving) it stalled for no good reason, starter cranks away tying to start it, (normally a very fast starter), turned off the key coasted looking for a place to ditch for a tow, tried it again and it started.
2. I got a mometary check engibe light that went out within a mile.
3. I noticed that the RPM's were at 1100 - 1200 idle.
4. I moved it in an out of the driveway over the last few days still idleiong high.
5. Tonight its in the street and not starting.
IDEA's, Bentleys does not go too far past 'do you have gas and is your battery good.
Thanks,
Steve:rolleyes

Fuel Pump

I will check for fuel pump afte work in the light. Probably pull some plugs and check and try starting fluid trick. I replaced the fuel pump about 10-15k ago?
I do need to rule out fuel, but I don't see the connection with a high idle, even after engine was up to temp?

Yeah, first thing i thought about was the fuel pump, it's a common problem. And symptoms is usually that the car will stall for no reason.

+3 on the fuel pump, same scenario for when mine was going out. Should have at least 50psi coming from the fuel pump. The bentley will show you how to do the test and which terminal to jump (I believe its the orange solenoid one next to the ecu). Thats 50psi before the regulator, so the fuel line closest to the radiator/front of the car (feed line), the one closest to the fire wall is the return line - it will only register about 3-6psi.

Its getting more interesting. I drove to Bav Auto today to buy a code scanner and a fuel pump (just in case). I downloaded the current fault codes. Now it won't start, acting like a fuel pump but had a high idle the last few times it ran. Here are the nienteen codes (LOL)
All fuel injector codes (6)
Camshaft sensor
Output Stage Group #1
Idle Speed Actuator Close
Ignition Timing Intervention
A/C Compressor Control
Air Mass Sensor
VANOS Solenoid
O2 Sensor Heating Relay
And a few more the scanner book doesn't have definitions for.
Now, where do you start? I would assume some of these codes will activate as a package when a component failure occurs. I will check the fuel pump tomorrow and the relay.
Are we having fun yet?

Only common component is the ENGINE, replace that and see if it will start. LOL

Thanks Upallnight!
I'll be upallnight many nights if I don't get this figured out.
Progress, this AM battery was fully chagred I reset all codes the night before. Turned the key and it fired right up. Ran at 1300 RPM from stone cold to operating temp. Shut it off and scanned again. Only two codes remain;
11 - Camshaft sensor
64 - Output Stage Group #1
I am getting further away from the fuel issue.
Does anyone know anything on these two codes. Bentleys does not mention a camshaft sensor.
Output Stage Group #1 - Whats that?
Thanks,
Steve

What about the CPS (crankshaft position sensor)? I know things get flaky when they go bad, and many times when it was thought to be a fueling issue the CPS was found to be bad. Before spending any money I'd check the fuel pressure like advised above, but if that turns out good then measure the resistance of the CPS. Bentley is wrong on those apparently, it says around 1200 ohms, consensus here is around 560 ohms. If the CPS is getting weak it may be causing the issues - no signal from it means the injectors don't fire. Just something to think about as you go testing parts. Good luck.
