I'm not sure if this is very widely known or not, because I always read about people disconnecting their battery to reset their CEL.

Well I was diagnosing my car the other day and unplugged some sensors, etc. which threw a CEL. One would not go off even after I plugged the sensor back in and I had read about the CEL reset trick:

Turn your key to the on position and back to the off position 3 times in a row. This should clear your CEL.

It worked for me, but that's because the CEL wasn't a malfunctioning part. I'm sure that the CEL would still come on if one's car did have an erroneous part that the ECU detects upon start-up.

Nevertheless, this is a useful trick for diagnosing your car without a scan tool.
