Just wondering when you guys decided to give up on trying to educate the general public about the differences between beamer and bimmer?
Conversations usually go,
Dude "Oh nice a beamer how much did it cost you"
Me "Bimmer man, beamers are bikes"
Dude "Haha it's beamer bro"
Me "..."
Dude "So how much did the beamer cost you? I heard upkeep on beamers is high even if you get em cheap"
At this point i just sort of die inside and give up.

That's the general concensus, but then again, I don't care when they think or know, I just drive and enjoy my 'beamer' :shifty

I've never corrected anyone, nor tried to educate anyone on the difference. It just comes off as too douchey to even bother.

Depends on the day really, if my douche mode is on or not. Most of the times I just walk away and leave them talking to the trees.

I'm more picky about it in print vs. conversation. You could make the (admittedly difficult) argument that "Bimmer" is pronounced with a long i, "Bee-mer," and so the two words would be homonyms.
For what it's worth, "Bee-mer" is much more natural to say than "Bim-mer," owing to the fact that when we say "BMW," we start with the bee sound, not bih. There's more of a verbal connection between "BMW" and "Bee-mer." So that might explain why some people who know better persist with saying it "Bee-mer" in conversation.

I don't give a poop one way or another. If I say Bimmer in conversation I get blank stares. Everyone knows what you're talking about when you say Beamer. If I'm talking to an automotive enthusiast, I'll say Bimmer, if I'm talking to someone who doesn't really care about cars, I'll say Beamer.
I wouldn't care if these cars were called Sammy Davis Jr., I don't drive it for what it's called, nor because of any perceived "status" symbol it presents.
I drive my slow Toyota 4x4 pickup the same way, albeit, slower where need be for obvious reasons. I always wonder, if when I pass someone while driving the M3 if they think: "Douchebag BMW owner..."
I doubt they'd think the same way if I passed them in my Pickup. LOL. Slow, rusty, big tires tube bumper etc...

I just avoid saying "bimmer" (no matter what pronunciation) as much as possible. When someone writes "beamer" is the only time I bother to correct them.
like for a Porsche "porsh vs porsha"

I knew there was a difference, but am kinda INdifferent to the semantics as I am trying to get the mechanics down at this point.

Sorta, but not quite. Because Porsch - uh is the guy's last name and how it's pronounced. Bimmer is just a nick name for our cars.
I call it a BMW - thats what it is. Doesn't need some pet name.

I pronounce it as "bee-mer" regardless if I'm talking about a bimmer or beamer. I only get specific when it comes to writing, like on forums or paper. Most of us pronounce it the same in austin.

I reply with "my what?" every time they repeat themselves until they finally say BMW. Then I say, "Oh, my bimmer." They get the point.

I'd never even seen the term "bimmer" before I came to this board. And no one I've ever spoken to since I've owned bmw has ever used the word.
I have on occasion mentioned that among enthusiasts it's "bimmer", but then we just laugh about how funny enthusiasts can be.
Why is it that the bikes are beemers and the cars are bimmers anyways?

both wanted cool names and to be able to be properly identified? ::shrugs::
In all honesty, though... I don't even like the term bimmer, either.
