Hello all,

I will be taking my car tonight on alittle drive (roughly 150 miles round trip) thing is my stock tire on the back has the tread coming out so I need to put on my spare. How bad is it for my differential if I have one stock rear wheel (255/40/17) and one spare wheel on the other side with the size 225/55/16?

if it matters its on my 01 540 6 speed and does not have a limited slip differential.

If I did my math correctly the 225/55/16 tire is about 0.7 inches larger in diameter than the 255/40/17.

I wouldn't be too concerned about driving on it for a little while. 150 miles is probably doable.

If you are really concerned about it then put the spare tire on the front and put one of your front tires on the rear. That way the tires are the same diameter and you won't have to be concerned about your diff.

no youll be fine thats what the spare tire is used for. Now if it were a donut you would have a prob but yours should be good. fyi the spare tire is best on the rear of the car anyway:D

IMHO, you need new tires with consistent sizes. The odd size is OK in an emergency.

The car has an open diff: it wont matter that they're different diameters ... you might get pulling to one side as a side effect but it wont hurt the car.
