How about the Continental ExtremeContactDW?? That get very positive reviews on Tirerack: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Continental&tireModel=ExtremeContact+DW&frontTire=35YR8ECDW&rearTire=545YR8ECDWXL&vehicleSearch=true&fromCompare1=yes&autoMake=BMW&autoYear=2001&autoModel=740iL%20Sport%20Package&autoModClar=

Pilot sports arent good imo.. I have them on right now and when they get warm they dont stick. I had Falkens on there and when they were warm they were literally sticky. It gripped like hell..

My summer set of M-parallels are running on Michelin Pilot Sports, I think they work until the pavement is wet; then the traction light just goes nuts... I wouldn't mind getting them again though... I was looking at Pirelli P-Zero's...

Its hard to justify the price of the Pilot Sports when you compare their performance to other tyres.
The Good Year Eagle F1s perform almost as well and are far cheaper.

If your tires are lasting 30,000 miles, you are not driving correctly! :stickoutt
I had the Pilots and now have the Kumhos. Trust me, don't spend the extra money on the Pilots.

Right now I have the Kumho Ecstas. They have a bad reputation for going out of balance/out of round. I have the 60-65 shimmy from them. I ordered the 255/285 Michelin pilot sports today. I hope I like them. I'll keep you posted.

+1
I'm running these now, the price was right, although weather is a bit rough to do any serious testing, but the tread life and the cost were right.

I just bought a 740i sport in US for import to Canada....it has Michelin Pilot Sports ...so far no chance to see what tire can do but am looking forward to seeing how they perform....I see from Edwin picture that he drives in snow......are these the tires that you use in those conditions....or do you park this car and use other winter vehicle?

Your profile says you are located in the 'couv, so you'll be fine for winter. Unless, you plan on going in the mountains.
If so, get dedicated winter tires. Please.
Here in Montreal, we get all kinds of winter roads: Slush, Ice, Snow. It's also the law for us to have winter tires. We need them. I went with Toyo Observe G-O² Plus. Amazing bang for your winter buck.
All Season tires are good down to 7 °C. After that, the rubber compounds get too hard.
Back on topic, I like the Michelin Pilot Sports.

I'm running the Michelin pilots on m-pars right now and they are cool handling wise, and speed ratings, but like he said... they're not so good in the cold wet weather. The kuhmos I had before I switched to the bigger calipers were awesome! Very quiet and smooth. I'm about to get some new rears, and I was wondering what else might be out there as well. I see some guys pass by me sometimes with M-pars but a different tire from mine, and I know I am on the OEM sport tires... so I wish I knew what they were using.

Pilot Sports are dedicated summers. NO WAY can you use them in Canadian winters...now the Pilot SPort A/S(all season) is not unreasonable to use..though the compound will still get stiff under 0 degrees Celcius.

My car sees little road time in the winter but I have been pleased with Bridgestone Serenitys.

I was looking into the Bridgestone Serenitys, but thought I would find them too "serene". lol Sure I want the most noiseless, comfortable riding tires, but I don't want to loose any performance. The feeling/feedback means more to me than the statistical performance. If another tire looses control at a higher speed than my tire, so what? So what if the other tire is better off the line? I would take my tire over the other tire all day long if my tire felt better. My favorite characteristic of tires, and what I look for the most, is how the steering feels, and how tight the car handles. Tires have the potential to change the entire car, so choosing them is a difficult process.

I looked at my tires and I see that they are "All Season"........even so I will be trying to avoid the snow. Not only because many drivers will be sliding all over the roads but also becuase of the corrosive effect of the salt on the car itself.
Like to hear opinions and experience of others on how to best minimize effect of ice, snow and salt on car without going to extent of parking it for winter?

Get it rust checked before they lay the salt. After that best you can do is wash it as much as you can afford. The worst damage is when that salt sits on the car...especially underneath, so hand spray it or go to a car wash that sprays your rockers from the bottom. Salt gets inside the doors and sits in the bottom of those trim pieces on the door bottom...try taking them off couple times a week(they're just held by pressure) and washing the door really well around there where the drain holes are

I have tried just about every tire tire rack has and have had nothing but bad luck with Kuhmo's. Conti's extremes are not a good idea, Michelin are a great tire if you can afford them, Yokohama tires are all good. I was told that the new Hancock's ventus v4 are really good on wear and in the rain but I have not tried them. Pirelli's wear out like butter and not good in the rain. Just my 2 cents. Hope I can help.

The Michelin Pilot Sport 285/40/18 is going out of production. They don't make a PS in this size, either. So rather than pay $1400 for them and wait 5 days to get them delivered from out of state, I opted for the regular Pilot Sports in 235-255 sizes. On the car and feel great!!
