I have a 2009 X5 diesel. I hate the brake dust the factory pads emit. I'm thinking of going to aftermarket pads (EBC, red or green low dust) has anybody used these and how have they worked?

My mechanic, In Whom I Trust, recommends Akebono ceramic. Virtually any aftermarket "street performance" pad (Axxis, Hawk, Porterfield, etc.) will make less dust than stock and generally perform better. Ceramics make the least dust, or the least noticeable dust, anyway. I've never used EBC, but I would say they don't have the best reputation in BMWland.

I can tell you from personal experience that akebono ceramics submit no where near the amount of dust the oem pads do(have them on my X5 now). However, you are going to lose some breaking power with the akebono pads compared to oem.

I have heard that if you want low dust, to go with ceramic break pads. The issue is they don't quite have as much bite as the stock OEM pads.

I hate the brake dust on my wheels. Especially when it comes time to clean my basket-weaves.

Never tried them, so can't comment, but go to BavAuto.com

Search Part # : 2143

Kleen Wheels - Set of 2 - For 18" style 209 5 indented star spoke wheel (Make sure you get the one intended for your rims)

BavAuto doesn't sell crap, so I'd trust it. Do some research on it. Seems like a better solution to me.

Those covers will make the brake pads very hot.

I was doing a little research to find out exactly how they worked, but haven't found anything.

I'd imagine they would be fine for a moderately street driven X5. I guess if you drive hard I wouldn't think about it, but who knows.

I've heard good things about some of the above mentioned brands. Akebono euro ceramic pads come to mind. I use OEM pads because I like them. I just clean my wheels every couple weeks. Takes 5 minutes.

Black wheels hide the dust :)

I have used Hawk Ceramics on my 1995 M3 for the last 7 years. They have a little less initial bite, but they have very good stopping power and they provide very linear braking. They also produce quite a bit less dust than the factory pads, Tony

If I cleaned mine every couple weeks my wheels would look like they were painted black. :eyecrazy

Under normal operating conditions, I clean mine every two days or so. Then again, I hate the slightest amount of dust on my wheels.

I've had them for over a year now and if anything I think they stop better than the stock Jurid pads I pulled off. The initial bite isn't as great, but if they've been bedded in properly, the actual stopping power will be damn good.
