It's not the bulb... It's the auto leveling device (the part we can't get... factory installed only). The bulbs change color because they are being aimed differently as the car drives (it's U.S. Law that all factory installed Xenons must have a self leveling device to prevent blinding other drivers).
When the lights turn blue they are aimed too far down, a purple-ish tint means they are almost right, a bright white with a bluish tint means they are dead on... and when they are too high... they're blinding... you'll know.

Not quite. I had an S2000. It had no auto leveling device, and it did have a freaky color spectrum around the top cut-off line of the projection pattern (ie, lights had a very distinct cut-off). The color spread appeared to be due to diffraction effects.
Not sure if most other hid equiped cars have auto-leveling, but the s2000 did not. Come to think of it, the S2000 was a pretty raw car. Not even a clock!

It all has to do with the optics of their ellipsoid lens because the s2k's use Osram d2s bulbs. The same bulbs that are used in half of the e46's (the other xenon systems on bmw's use philips, it a random thing)

Are you sure? I used to be in the honda/acura crowd and I do remember people complaining alot about the car's self leveling headlight system. On bumpy roads, driver's of oncoming cars thought the drive of the s2000 was flashing (high-beaming) them because the auto-level device would be over compensating on bumpy roads.

I thought that the self-leveling device was required by law on all xenons in the U.S., that's why all the aftermarket kits are "For Off-Road Use Only."
the zenons you guys have in your ellipsoids dont color change? thats kinda lame why did you get them then instead of the cheap blue bulbs?

They're PURE white.... at the edges of the cutoff they turn a little purple. I don't really kno too much because i've never really seen my car when its coming at me. I guess thats somethin to do.... when its out of the body shop all clean and new :D

Kevlar,
To my knowledge, only the high-end luxury cars (eg, benz, lexus) were the only ones to use auto leveling. And, auto leveling only kicked in when a static load caused the rear to sink (eg, two heavyweights in the back seat).
I had my s2000 for 10,000 miles and 9 mos. I knew read the manual cover to cover, and stayed current on all issues on the s2k forums. There was no auto-leveling in the little bugger. All the 'flashing' was due to a very stiff suspension and a discrete horizontal cut-off. Every time I hit a bump, the front of the car would bounce and cause a 'flash', looking like I was high-beaming cars. I used to get flashed by oncoming cars from time to time.

frayed,
How much did you pay for the S2000??
Is it possible to buy it at MSRP?? I'm in So. Cal.

JT,
I paid MSRP + MSRP for all the 'add-ons'. Add-ons included front lip spoiler, side strakes, rear deck spoiler, cargo nets, cover, cd-changer, alarm, wheel locks, and probably some other crap that I cannot remember. Anyway, I was soaked for 32.4k plus about 5k for all the add-ons, which, if I bought them online, would have cost me less than half that.
I bought the car for 37k and sold it for 32k (actually an even trade for my 97 M3/4). I liked the car, but since the day I bought it, I missed the bmw 'feel' that I had become so accustomed to.
Oh, and I sorta had to dump it because we had a baby girl, Annabelle Elizabeth. She thinks my M3 is yummy.

From what I heard and read.. its the law to have auto leveling system for all HID systems.. Its nothing u maintain or adjust so perhaps it wouldnt be mentioned in the manual.. ask the Honda dealer. But Im pretty sure they all should have an auto leveling system if its HID.
S2000's do not have an auto-leveling system.
My understanding is that some European countries (Germany) require headlight washers and levelers on certain types of headlight systems.
Why BMW doesn't get with the program and provide HID's as standard equipment is beyond me...
