Do you start the car with the door still open?
Does it only happen when the key is in the ignition?
Are the "status" arrows illuminated on the Check Control Display?
Do you have an owners manual?
Could there be a Priority 1 or 2 warning in the Check Control Display?

It more of a Trrrrrrrrrrrrring noise and lots of people have it. Something about the auto start not disengaging fast enough. Several people have posted about it. I think the last consensus was that its probably not harmful. But what do I know.....

Check you voltage of the battery, lower voltage could cause the bendix from the starter not to pull back quick enough, a tap on the gas should solve it

well there are no display lights or anything but it is a loud ding and it seems like its coming from under the car, its not a notification, more like a peice of metal getting hit similar to a bell
and it only does one quick bell ring right before the engine turns on

I actually started a thread on this a while ago, startup ting. Its normal, I was just getting reassurance from everyone. I have heard it on nearly all v8 bmws I have ever started as well as my 740 and another one I just had. Doesn't happen all the time, but when it does it resonated through the transmission bellhousing.

Is it a very high-pitched sound from behind the air conditioning control panel?
If the answer is yes, it is a stepper motor oscillating, annoying but not harmful.
