I need to reset the airbag light on my 99' M3 and was wondering if anyone has had experience with this tool?

And I was also wondering how long it took for the sensors to reset? Both mile and time wise

Any input will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

And here is the link to the reset tool.

That is the Peake tool it's pretty much the standard for BMW SRS reset tools. You basically read the code correct it then reset it. It resets instantly assuming you corrected the problem. If you try to reset the light without correcting the problem it will instantly return.

Do you know of a way to get it to turn off for a day or so?
I need it to turn on when the key is turned but turn off when the car is started in order to pass the salvage vehicle inspection.:(

Remove the cluster and take out the light bulb that lights up the SRS.

Taking the bulb out may not work - I believe there is another bulb behind the first...

I just used the tool to fix my 98...pretty straightforward. Find out what's wrong, fix it and reset ;)

Were the bags blown? If not, probably a pass seatbelt receptacle...

there is no way to turn it off for a day or two. That is safety relevant, no way to trick the system like with a paper clip for oil reset. You have to solve the problem first, then the light can be reset, otherwise it will go on or it even will not go out.
There are clever people who believe removing the bulb helps, but there are 2 more LED behind that for example in my E32 cluster. And the inspector wants to see the light on first when you switch ignition on, then it should go off. Solve the problem first, then you can reset the light.
Airbag/SRS light reset tool SIR3 I have for sale under BMW classifieds here in the forum. That is cheaper than the Peake tool and also resets oil, service and annual inspection light. But it does not scan for faults.

(I have never taken my instrument panel off but my $0.02) You could cross the wires from the srs light with the ones from, say, the oil one, then it would come on and go off with the oil light but not stay on.

If it's the seat belt receptacle what is the fix? How would you check to see it it's the seat belt or not?

This is a major culprit to the SRS light the fix is replacing it, and the above mentioned tool (or one like it) is used to determine the problem (and clear the code once fixed).

There is no point in guessing what the problem is. Even a low voltage will set the light, and it won't reset without the tool.

Thanks for all of the info. I scanned it before and 2 codes were pretensioners and other 2 I don't remember.
There were NO deployed airbags but the car was totaled before I bought it. Me and my dad fixed it and it could be anything from the airbag module (which was already replaced) to pinched wires.

I was thinking about doing this but splicing it to the check engine light instead but I suppose the oil light would be better.
Im going to give this a try this week.
If anyone has ever done this some tips would be greatly appreciated.

Just buy this SRS tool:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BMW-Airbag-Scan-Reset-Tool-B800-Airbag-Reset-Kits-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem255e9e674aQQitemZ16050 1229386QQptZMotorsQ5fAutomotiveQ5fTools (http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?campid=5335818596&toolid=10001&mpre=http%3A%2F%2Fcgi.ebay.com%2Febaymotors%2FBMW-Airbag-Scan-Reset-Tool-B800-Airbag-Reset-Kits-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem255e9e674aQQitemZ16050 1229386QQptZMotorsQ5fAutomotiveQ5fTools)

I bought it for $40 shipped. Works perfectly fine. And contrary to what everyone here says, just for kicks I reset my airbag light without fixing the passenger seat occupancy sensor, and it stayed off for a day or two before coming back on. It also lit up with just the ignition on.

Even just a momentary fault causes the SRS lamp to be illuminated. If you clear the codes the light will stay out until the next time a fault is detected which may be immediately if it's a hard fault or an extended period of time if it's an intermittent fault.
The seat belt receptacle and the passenger seat occupancy sensor tend to be intermittent type faults. You may find that you clear the codes and you're good for long enough to get though inspection.
As for removing the lamp, that won't work. There's an LED right behind it as a backup light source. It's not as bright as the lamp but your SRS indicator will still be on. Switching the wiring won't do it either. It will only affect the lamp and not the LED.
