If it helps any I know some people have put 740i sport seats and installed them in their e39s. I would imagine it would be a direct swap assuming the electrical connectors are the same.

LOL yes and I would happen to be one of ^ those people that you know with a e38 sport seat set in a e39 :buttrock. And yeah you can drop a set from a 740i into an iL, provided the make of the years match up.

I did this recently thats why i have my old seats for sale . I assume your car is a 2001 so you will even have the same yellow connectors . Plug and play

depends on the year....04sshd has a 1995 and added 99-01 sport seats(see e38.org w/u) and had to resplice the wirring..Nothing is impossible as Colin showed but its NOT Plug n Play....Bolts right up tho.......
99-01 e38 seats are interchangable.......That I know 100% sure its plug n play

Since his car is a 2001 they are actually plug and play

Yes. Other than wiring harness ends, parts are interchangeable. e38 and e39 seat parts can be mixed and matched. Two choices for wiring. As already mentioned, cut and splice on the existing (old) harness ends for the seat. Option two is since you have the seat out, remove the wiring harness (new) from the seat and put in the existing (old) seat harness. Motor connections are the same. You will just have to splice in the 3/2 wires (driver/passenger) for the thigh support motor to the older harness. Either of the two methods takes about the same amount of time, providing you are soldering the harness ends when changing them out. Choice is yours.

How bout a 01 740iL Sport? :)

They didn't come with sport seats stock. If you have them in yours they have been retrofitted.

Any seat will fit from one to the other E38 just be sure the plugs have the same color and it's plug and pray
