View Full Version : 528i - suddenly rough idle, no power, CEL

I have a 1998 528i with 180,000 miles on it. Started idling/running very rough and having no power all the sudden. The Check Engine Light is also on.

Based on reviewing threads here and elsewhere, I think it can be one or more of these items causing the problems:

MAF
CCV
Vacuum line leaks
I decided to try the dealing with the MAF and CCV first, since they do not involve removing all the intake parts.

So, I have removed the MAF and am going to clean it. Frankly, it doesn't appear dirty at all inside, but since I have it off, I'm going to spray it out with CRC cleaner.

The CCV was a bear to get out. Getting it disconnected was not too bad, but manuevering it out the bottom took about 30 minutes, but I finally got it.:alright

Anyway, is there a way to test the CCV now that I have it out? :help It does not appear stopped up, as I can easily blow and suck through all three connections.

run the codes... I bet it's a failed coil

PS: the maf doesn't cause rough idle... I've disconnected mine and not noticed much change in idle.

Yes, I'm going to do the codes today. My understanding on the MAF is that if it's bad or dirty, it will cause a rough idle. If you disconnect it, to goes into default mode and it should run better than when connected, if it is in fact bad.

Run those codes. Narrow it down before you start throwing parts and time at it. If you clean your MAF regularly, you'll get better mileage and smoother running (rather than the rich mixture a dirty MAF will give you). ICV cleaning, new air filter, Cam Position Sensor..... all possibilities, but get those codes.

Okay, here are the codes:

p0101 MAF
p0301 Misfire Cylinder 1
p0201 Fuel Injector Cylinder 1
p0101 (pending) MAF
I'm not sure if the MAF-related codes are accurate, because I had to start to the car to move it with the MAF removed.

Anyway, I guess the CCV is fine since it doesn't appear clogged, so I'll slap that back on and mess with the injector wiring a bit. If that doesn't help, it looks like the only other thing I can do is replace the injector, correct?

I think that fuel injector code could be the cut-off due to the bad coil... when I had a bad coil I got the misfire + fuel injector cutoff warnings...

Try moving the coil to another cylinder, and if the misfire follows the coil then it's a bad coil.

Thanks. Will try and report back

If you will need a MAF, EAC Tuning (that is Mark) is the place to go! I just ordered one yesterday (Siemens/VDO) and he'll give you a very good deal just like everybody else. Mark is the MAN and Thanks much for the help.

Okay, I have the MAF and CCV back in, and now the engine is code free. Go figure.

I'm going to swap the 1 and 2 coils and if it throws a code again, I should be able to figure out if it's a coil or an injector.

Thanks for all your help.

Okay, swapped coil 1 and 2 and it's throwing p0201 and p0301, so it looks like it's a bad injector 1.

How hard is it to change injectors?

Why not cleaning them first???
