Turn signal coming on by itself? What gives?

I've noticed that from time to time my left turn signal would come on for a few seconds. Is this something common or do I have a short somewhere? The stalk itself does not appear to be broken or loose. This problem is very sporadic and occurs once, maybe twice a week. It usually happens on a highway (no bumps or pot holes).

haven't hit electrical systems 2 yet.. but surely sounds like you're having a short to ground or your switch is being faulty
