Chatter on start up

First off let me thank everyone who has contributed so much info so that we can keep our e38's on the road and running. I do have a question, when I start my 01 I get loud valve train chatter that quickly goes away. What could cause this and how can I fix it if possible. Car is in very good condition with 130k, maint regularly. Thanks

No fix.

I think you can fix it ... it costs a lot.... and it'll just come back....

You can try an engine flush like edwin did and it may reduce...

EDT: Oh yea I believe the officall term is "VANOS Rattle"

Engine flush only helps with the diesel sound when the engine is running. I do not believe that anyone has found a cure for the start-up rattle.

My advice is to not get obsessed with trying to stop it, as you will only miss out on the enjoyment of your car.
