And found this as the rim. I don't immediately recognize it. Thought it might be a BMW suv rim, but I'm probably wrong. It's 18x8 and I have an extra 225 40 18 tire so I think I'll mount it and use it as a fullsized spare!:D

Umm....that is a Style 69 wheel...and it was offered on the e38/e39/e53 (X5).
I hope it's NOT an X5 wheel...if it is...it's not going to fit to well on your e39 since the X5 has a HIGH wheel offset. I believe the X5's style 69 wheel has a wheel offset of approx 45mm-48mm.
Turn the wheel over and see if you can find the BMW part nbr (that's if it's a BMW wheel and not a replica). You may also see the wheel specs (height/width/offset).
This wheel (style 69) oft times get's confused with the X5 (exclusive) style 87 wheel...which has a bit more detail around the spokes of the wheel.

Interesting spare.
Now on the same topic of spare tire, my rubber in the spare is 12 years old and posted this thread:
Do you ever change the Spare Tire Rubber?
