The guy who sold me my police car the other day also happened to be a Bimmer fanatic like us and told me about a product called Plastikote. Its supposedly a flat black spray paint that can be peeled off at a later date with ease. I was thinking of buying a can and trying it on my rims just to see what it looks like, but before doing so I want to make sure it will eventually come off! Has anyone used this?

Do a search. I saw a write up (I think in the E32 forum) where a guy coated his water bottle and it turned out nice. If you pickup a can, just try it on your spare first....

Plastikote is the same stuff you dip your tool handles in.

Its pretty thick....

Brian, IIRC, they make a couple different products. One is a tool dip, another is a spray. They have several different product applications as well. The stuff I saw painted plastic parts and stuck quite well. I can't find the thread off hand.

There is Plastikote and dip it both are the same thing. I have used the stuff for years and my shadowline is plastikote spray. It does peel off it you want to with no residue and it is very durable.

I think that is the stuff "BMW TUNING" swears by...

It always sounded like good stuff

lol what crown vic did you end up buying? and yea when i had my vic we tested that stuff on the crown vic forum and had great results with it. the trick is to spray in thin multi coats just like any spray paint. i would be a little worried using it on the rims though.

Search for Plasti Dip on the e39 boards - they swear by the stuff. You can always just pull it off without any damage later.

Plasti-dip is awesome stuff. I have painted many chrome grills plack with it, as well as doing shadow lining. Indeed the nice thing is if you don't like how something tunred out, you can rub it off. Pretty good at being chip resistant being a rubber type compound. Out of an aerosol can it sprays a lot like a paint bomb.

Did you ever try it on the rims?

my entire chrome trim was done in this (check my build thread) and yes it would work on wheels and you can peel it off later
