like the subject reads, Bullet Performance, a well known, highly regarded BMW Specialist in the O.C. SoCal area just quoted me 20 hrs for the 3.0L engine/trans/driveline conversion for a total of $1600 in LABOR. i think this is fair but wanted to check w/some of the guys who may have already gone through this conversion.

does anyone else know of a good, competent shop in the socal area that has done this conversion cheaper?

i don't mind paying more for a job that only has to be done once but i just wanna make sure i'm being quoted the correct amount of time/hrs.

the muscle is going into an e36 325i 5spd if that matters.

thanks for the help guys.

2.5 days seems reasonable for a motor, transmission, drivetrain (ecu?) change...

but then again... i'm no mechanic

consensus so far seems that the 20hrs is fair although scottcs thinks it can be done in 16

20 hours sounds about right

a job never takes as long as the time alotted...if the person working on it worked 8 straight hour it could be done easily, now if you actually took 20 hours you need to start working faster

if you were to get an engine swapped at a dealer they would charge 16 hours, and your gettin tranny and rear end so 20 isnt too bad

Dinan330ic, thanks for your help. who performed your conversion and what was your final cost if you don't mind me asking?

initially $1200
then I decided to get a lot of things changed since the engine's out.

Bavarian Enterprises did my install. They did an awesome job.

that sounds about right. I paid about that much too. Make sure you get as much stuff as you can done while the engine is out.

Ditto what psk says. Flywheel, clutch, rear main seal, short shifter, all the pain in the butt stuff you'll regret not doing upfront.

I paid a bit more than what you were quoted, but I had more than just the engine and tranny swapped at the same time.

thanks for all your help guys.

SmOOve1, i spoke to ken at first, a good knowledgable guy but mickey ended up quoting me. now mickey, that dude is extremely cool, very customer friendly and very sharp when it comes to all things bimmers. i would recommend any bmw owner going in and talking to mickey at bullet if they're in the area. he will take care o' ya and he's not a total snob like most known bmw specialists in socal
