Has anyone here attempted to remove the AC compressor?
and what is involved in doing it?

You have to remove the front bumper and put the radiator and core support into service position then remove the compressor. It's not hard just time consuming.

If you are interested in diy projects on your MINI, get a Bentley Manual. It will take you about as deep as most non-professionals would want to venture. I am also very kind to my local tech, who bails me out on occasion.

Yes the Bentley Manual (http://www.waymotorworks.com/bentley-mini-service-repair-manual.html)will give you the best instructions for replacing it.
