I have a 1997 BMW 750 V12. The A/C will not really get cold. I just moved from California to Bahrain and it is very hot here. I've heard that I will need to refill the freon in the a/c system three to four times a year, but I wanted to check if that is a common occurrence for a car this year and model or if I may need to replace the a/c system entirely. It has a new A/C compressor pump, but that didn't really help. Thank you for any help you can give me!

No... it is not normal to fill the AC system more than once. if the freon (r134a) is low you have a leak... a good shop that does ac should have a leak detector and should be able to find it. you;ll likely have to replace one hose and the receiver/drier and recharge it.
After that it should be fine and need no further maintenance other than cleaning out leaves in front of the radiator.

It could be that you need to change the Recirculation Air Filters. These are located above the footwells underneath your dashboard. One on the drivers side and one on the passenger side. Do a search here or go to e38.org. where you can find hundreds of do it yourself repairs and upgrades for the E38. Good luck and welcome to the board.
