all of a sudden my navigation has a mind of its own when toggling to choose the letters. so the scroll bar will sometimes just randomly select a letter even without depressing the button. its incredibly frustrating because its basically useless. every time i try to scroll right to pick a letter it will work properly for a few seconds and then just have a mind of its own.

I must have driven thru a magnetic field or something because my belltronics radar detector stopped working in the middle of my trip today and combined with the frustration of the navigation i just was so pissed i threw it out the window...

anyone have any idea or suggestion? its a dvd navigation, pretty sure i upgraded it once 2 yrs ago to the latest software, but it has been working for years with no problems until recently...

Sounds like it might be a mechanical (button) problem with your Nav screen, not so much your MKIV (dvd) unit in the trunk.

I'd suggest doing the soft re-boot (pull the negative battery cable off the battery for 5 minutes). That might re-synch the screen with the Nav unit (worth a try). If it's a mechanical/button problem, it won't help that. Be sure to wait for the red LED to go out on the Nav unit in the trunk before pulling the battery cable.

Does the right button still click when you push it?

i thought about pulling the battery, but the red light on the nav system in the trunk doesnt seem to go out, and i was worried about frying the system. when i turn on the car i used to get the "BMW" on the screen, now it seems to go right to the nav screen, so i'm wondering if the system is staying on for some reason

you could pull the fuse for the nav. first before you disconnect the battery cable, wait the allotted time, replace the fuse, then re-connect the battery cable.

Hmmm. Unless his Nav is totally toast already, if you pull the fuse before the Nav's LED goes out, isn't that the exact same thing as pulling the battery cable before the LED goes out (cutting power to the Nav prematurely)?

Its nice when guys post follow ups so that people searching can actually get that much closer to a solution. Took the car to trusted mechanic and he made the astute observation that the nav disk i had was thicker than the OEM disk, which was causing the motor to labor. I had bought a burned version because i wanted the latest version, unfort my old disk has been scratched after years in the trunk, so turns out the problems are caused by the disk and not the button (i have not 100% confirm this diagnosis but the old original disk did seem to work better)

A thicker disk? well put it in your computer and make an image and reburn on a other disk
