I had to replace my passenger side rear tire about 3 weeks ago. I was told a it had a nail embedded. Tonight, the "flat tire" icon went off again. I'm assuming another tire will be required. Does this car require "run flat tires" from the BMW dealer, or can I just buy a tire from one of the major tire distributors? And which one?

You have an e46, so no runflats their, at least not from the factory. Anyway, your tire should be patchable as long as the tire is not otherwise damaged. Just take it to a good tire shop and they should take care of it.

Thanks for your reply. I'm assuming that my car didn't need a "run flat tire," suggested by the dealer's service tech to replace my tire.
Next time, I'll check out a new tire with one of the large tire distributors.

After posting my question, I read the owner's manual regarding "flat tire" icons. I followed the icon re-set directions, and it seems to have worked! The icon hasn't returned to the dashboard. I'm crossing my fingers that the reason the flat tire icon lit up on the dashboard-- wasn't electrical.
