I just did the swap to the E32 Auto-dim mirror using this write-up: http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1271956
I have a 10/94 540i. First off, the wire that Denton says you need to go find was already hooked up to my existing mirror. I looked for another unused wire anyways, but there was none and since this was already set up this way, I figured that it was pretty safe to assume its the right cable.
When I pulled the existing mirror, the car alarm went off. So I plugged in the new one quickly with no difficulty at all. Immediately, the alarm went off, but the emergency flashers continued to blink. I could not figure out how to get them to go off. I tried engaging the button on the console and then disengaging it, but it did nothing. I closed the door and locked the car, and all that did was let me know that the unlock button on the remote no longer works. I unlocked the door manually from the inside and that worked fine. A minute later, the flashers went off by themselves.
At this point, I put everything back as it was.
Next, I got out to grab my flashlight to see if it was a successful swap. The about 1-2 seconds after I got out, the doors locked. I got out my key (which I had in my pocket fortunately) and tried the unlock button. Nothing. The doors unlocked fine with the key. I got in. The doors locked again about 1-2 seconds after I closed the door.
I covered the light sensor on the front with my hand and shined the light on the back facing sensor to see if it worked. Nothing happened. I fooled around for a few minutes, but could not get the mirror to autodim.
So now I have a mirror that is not working as it should in a car that is paranoid about being stolen. So paranoid that when I unlocked it at the driver's door and went to open the trunk, it had already locked itself again.
I'm clueless. Any ideas on how to fix this? I could put up with the locking if the mirror worked probably, but if I can't get it working, I will certainly be switching back to the original mirror.
Thanks!
