Learn the back hand shift. No problems here...

Don't do that, keep it vanos. That you its a direct swap and you don't have to worry about ECUs and crap

im only swaping a non v because i cant find any other motor and i need my car to get to work and the non v im getting is very cheap
coolx7
09-23-2010, 08:47 PM
why dont u use the non vanos bottom end with the vanos head. i think buying just the head with the vanos unit maybe cheap. could save u some money and work there.

Not to be an ass, but how the hell does someone miss a shift like that? I've been noticing it's an e36 thing...

Well.. THAT is bad.... dunno what else to say lol. I almost moneyshifted once but I was letting the clutch out slow and saw it go up to 5k so I clutched back in =P

well. You should probably invest in some tranny mount enforcers and refresh you shift linkage, maybe with a dssr or ssk while you replace the motor. unless you want to make it a hobby of replacing motors.

I dont know why everyone is being a dyke about it. You have a positive attitude and thats all that matters. Get the cheaper motor in there if it'll do the trick and get you outta the hole. You'll be back up and running in no time! Also, you should POSSIBLY do what most people suggest if you have the money and time.
In the future, try not to be a racey/hard driver, it'll avoid all of this.
Good luck.

No, all you have to do is shift correctly like the technique link I posted on page one.

How can you moneyshift from 3 going to 2? Unless you did this while being at the redline in 3, I can't see this happening. The rev difference between 2 and 3 isn't that great.
I understand money shifting from 5 to 2 instead of going into 4, but from 3 to 2...

I would guess the OP had topped out 3rd and wanted to shift to 4th but went to 2nd = kaboom or rattle rattle rattle.

this guy is right . remember this is the 3rd time doing it ..yes full redline at 3rd right back down to second gear

Ha yes, that makes sense.
But still, 3 - to - 4 is straight down, second is down-left.

This the problem with the shifters on these cars. 2nd and 4th are easily mistaken for each other if not using the correct shifting technique.
I find the shifter naturally sits to the left so when pulling down from 3rd to 4th it kind of wants to go into 2nd naturally.

If that is the case, I'd check all the linkages and bearings and stuff. The shifter should be dead in the middle when in neutral.

The engine mounts and trans mounts get worn and under WOT the torque rotates everything to the right a little. So you think you are going straight down into 4 ... BUT NOT :( You guys wondering how in the hell you could do that just better be hoping the karma monkey isn't looking over your shoulder.

Meh, doesnt look like a big deal. Just throw the head back on. You will get better mileage from 5 pistons than you would with 6 anyways. :D

Im guessing it was motor/trans mounts, not linkage bushings. How would loose bushing cause the shifter to torque the gear selector...into second gear?

Funny any MT I used the shifter naturally sits to the right, between 3rd and 4th.
