Was getting my stuff out of my touring when I noticed the top driver's side cargo area was wet. It rained a couple hours before so that was the cause of the water. I pull my weather strip down to check for a clog and sure as sh*t there was muck just covering the the area. I clean it out with a plastic stick, dry the wet portion, and put it back together thinking the water probably just flowed over the muck getting into the area.
WRONG :mad. I wash it the next day and there was some water still getting in. Next idea was to buy some silicon. I assumed that the weather stripping was the culprit because the fit wasn't that great. So I silicon the rear portion of the weather stripping and again put it back together. I water tested it about a couple hours later only to see water dripping. What gives?
Any touring owners with this problem? A nice close up of your top tailgate would give me an idea about my problem.

I have not read much about leaking tailgates.
Are you sure the weather seal is seated correctly?
No debris stuck inside the channel?
Don't know if this pic will help, but I happen to have it on my photobucket.

the hose for the sunroof could leak, but I see no way for the hatch itself to leak.

I have had the hatch leak as you explain, and the first thing i checked was the weather strip too..
But to the solution(hopefully): open the hatch glas and the hatch too, then look over the plastic on top so it seats correctly, mine wasn't sitting right, even though it looked like it was. But i noticed that it had rubbed against the edge of the roof.
If that doesn't sit properly (the plastic "folds around" the hatch) it will not seal correctly against the weatherstrip when you close the hatch.

I don't have a sunroof so its really the tailgate area.

Yeah I'm trying to get the seal as tight as I can, no debris, and thanks for the pic.

At night, lay in the car with a flashlight. Have some one spray around with a garden hose.
This is the easiest way to pinpoint the leak.

Yup you're right about this. The weather strip isn't sealing at the top part.
