Just installed a new Mishimoto radiator with a TorqFlo electric fan.

Check this out:

I'm lucky to have placed the fan where it is, any more to the driver's side and it would hit it.

In fact, the nut already hits it, so I had to grab some zip ties to pull the motor literally 2 mm away from the rotating nut. If I ever pull the radiator in the future, I'll be sure to buy another mounting kit to remount the fan a bit more to the passenger side.

Note to anyone wanting to install an electric fan: Mount it as close as possible to the outlet side of the radiator if you wanna avoid hitting stuff.

edit: lol picture fail

Think about removing the nut? It's just decorative. If you keep the threaded area on the water pump coated with a light oil it won't corrode.

the engine wont move far enough under load to hit the fan?

There's going to be some contact there even if your engine mounts are in great shape. Maybe enough to cause damage. I wouldn't leave it like that if I were you.

looks like a 2002... except that in those, it's the fan and the rad.

Can I remove the nut with no problem? I didn't do the FDM, it was the PO. I don't have a big enough wrench methinks

Damn, I just realized that in order to remove the nut, I would have to remove the fan, which includes the radiator. CRAP!

Any other options? I've been driving like this for a day, did some spirited, seems to be fine.

Remove the nut. The abrasion will drill through whichever is softer over time: the nut or the fan motor.

Check the fan for signs of contact. Perhaps you can just live with it if there aren't any.

The top of the nut does seem to contact the fan motor, but doesn't seem to cause any kind of damage. I'm thinking about squirting some lithium grease in there to lessen the friction.

Next time the radiator has to come out, I'll have a new mounting kit to get it an inch to the side, away from the nut. I'll take the nut off too.

still looks dangerous

Mine is a 1.9L but it came with an electric fan factory and there is no nut. Just the rusty threads. No real reason to put grease on the threads as there will never be anything threading on there in the future.

Did your car ever have a front end collision before? Looks like pulling the radiator support might also be a cause...

If not, I'm with Myblackcar

and you don't want to know what the end result might be with a model that already has common heating/cooling issues.

The car was in an accident, but I don't know the details at all. Also, I'm not sure if you know what you're looking at in the pic, that's the clutch fan nut and the motor for the fan I just installed...

That's what I was looking at. The radiator support also can dictate how far the distance is, if it's still in a bit. But I could be wrong.

So, have you removed the nut yet?
Got a pic showing the extra clearance?
