again...... anything under 500hp/500tq will be a failure....:(

I don't see bmw making a m5 csl, unless its renamed. Anything under 500/500 would be a failure in my book too. Consumers are looking at numbers right now IMO, and with new things coming from MB and Audi, I think the M5 is going to be playing catchup. We'll see though.

MB is rumored to be coming out with a 700+TQ monster soon... I don't remember the HP #'s, but i'm guessing 630+? Looks like the M5 will forever be playing catchup... E55 AMG 476HP/512TQ (or is it 521TQ) Regardless that's some tough competition, especially for something that's a step backwards in terms of design... Drop the V10 in the current M5 body, lower compression and add boost...

A subaru salesman (who just happens to own a bmw) said the plain wrx will beat the next M5. I laughed in his face
If all we want is HP then why not just buy the BMW F1 CAR?
Making power so ridiculously high really doesnt have THAT MUCH of a point anymore. Plus its gonna drive prices up to retarded levels. If you want all this power, custum build a bmw or get it modded...

an m car with boost never gonna happen from the factory. The engine in the e60 m5 is pure f1 tech:D never gonna come boosted from the factory

I wonder what it will sound like? Will it have that high compression scream the F1 cars do?

You are thinking of the MB CL65.
This E60 M5 is going to rock. The new 5 series is already lighter than the previous one.
I can't decide which one will be more desirable, the new M4, M5, or M6. Lots of fun :D

"engineers have lifted the lid on the new M5 - and it looks like BMW has gone power mad. Exclusive pictures in the current issue of Auto Express magazine show early reports that the V8 unit from the last version would be dropped in favour of a V10 are true, and the result is a 493bhp supercar-chaser that will be racing up alongside Mercedes' E55 AMG by the end of next year.
Thanks to the 5.0-litre engine, the M5's power output has increased by 93bhp, while torque is up 10 per cent to a huge 550Nm. Unlike on rivals from Mercedes, Audi and Jaguar, the firm has shunned the use of turbo or superchargers in favour of the smooth delivery of a normally aspirated unit. Performance is still expected to be blistering, with 0-62mph covered in 4.5 seconds :) and a limited 155mph top speed.
Power will be fed through a revised version of the M3's six-ratio SMG gearbox, but some other hi-tech aids may be left on the options list. A traction-control system will be fitted, along with the Dynamic Drive suspension set-up, but the German firm's new Active Steering could be frowned upon by buyers who want a more raw experience. The car will be officially revealed in the metal for the first time at the Detroit Motor Show in January, with production starting next autumn.
For those who want even more performance, a lightweight CSL version set to produce 542bhp is also in the pipeline. After the M5 project has been finished, BMW's motorsport division will turn its hand to the next M3. As with its 5-Series stablemate, this will get more cylinders, with the straight-six being replaced by a potent V8 :buttrock :buttrock :buttrock when the newcomer goes on sale in 2006. "

I think they should make the M5 more like a csl, standard. 542 HP in a chassis that's already lighter than the E39 would be awesome. Furthermore, I don't think putting a V8 in the 3 series would be a good idea. I think 6 cylinders would keep it light and balanced. It seems like the 3er's get bigger and bigger. Just my observation.:az:

I agree. Bigger and heavier. If the new 3 series is lighter than the E46 that would be very impressive!

Guys, I heard that the I-6s are steel and the V-8s weigh the same, is this true?
o the M3 is gonna no longer be a straight six..
hmmm
M3 wont sound the same..

If they can make a v8 m3 that is just as heavy as the current I-6 wouldnt that just mean a smoother ride as far as engine goes cuz u have more cylinders firing. and obviously a lot more power.

The new 5 series looks like a Pontiac.
but its essentially changing the heart of the M3!
M3 is famous for being a straight six..
Youre like messing with its SOUL
I say stay with six, and let the other M's handle more cylinders..

other say 4 clyinder M3 was the most famous.
id welcome a V8 M3 and a V10 M3 because i know BMW will make a great handing, well balanced sports car.
but why does the M3 have to have the V 8 or V 10..?
Arent they loosing some of the range of cylinders that their sportscars have in a way.. I mean theres a limit to how many cylinders youre going to use max.. so i mean with the M3,4,5,6 they should be able to cover them..!

'Cause the NA straight six isnt enough power. I am all for a V8 M3/4.

FI is for weenies...
BMW is making a drivers car. Instantanious throttle response, quick revving, quick steering, SMG. Mercedes uses their torque in a very weak way. It's very "smooth" and you don't get the same feedback as you do in the sport BMWs. It's like, driving a jaguar. Sure, they are fast, but they aren't any fun to drive.
Anways, a V10 people. 8300rpm redline. What the hell do you want here. There's only so much HP you can ever use. And most people who buy any of the cars stated in this thread will never go above 90 (unless in Germany).
I think it goes like this...if you can actually afford an M5, then complain about it. If you can't, what do you care? You're going to get something pre-owned and tune it yourself.
BMW may not head the HP wars, but wait till they take the new M5 around the 'ring. Then compare it to the MB and Audi equivilants and watch them come up wanting...

Are we forgeting the e30 m3  i do belive it had an I4 not an I6
I think a v8 m3 will be great it will give the m3 the torque it has always been missing:D
price is definately also a factor.. Power is good. Being able to get it is also helpful!

It would also be impressive if BMW doesn't fuck up and they actually release an attractive new car.
Reminds me of the golden days...
The E39 & Before 5 series..
The E38 & Before 7 series..
The E36 Z3..
And all the classic Bimmers..
Ahh memories.....
