I have been dealing with pressure in the coolant for a while now. I have tried various things, new water pump, thermostat, fan clutch, fluids to name a fiew. In the end I added a VDO pressure guage on the coolant to monitor when the pressure would start to build. The car was ok untill 30minutes into driving when the pressure started to build up. Also I could see that the pressure would build faster if I drove in boost. It wasnt obvious that the HG was gone, but it was obvious that something was wrong :D
I started to worry about a cracked head and all kinds of stuff, so in the end.. with no mechanical skills or experience.. I drove the car into my garage and pulled the head off.
Then I notided that the MLS HG was blown between cyl 1-2 and 2-3 (burned) The pistons seemd ok, also the block but I was not sure about the head.

Possible reasons..
1. Detonation / too agressive ignition
2. The 440cc injectors at 4 bar were not enough
3. Various other reasons
The car is originally tuned for 12psi by a very skilled tuner. Since then... I have added a boost controler (play‘d around with boost and GAIN) The airbox blew so I modified the Original BMW, I added a Variable FPR, changed the intake for the turbos and other stuff like the 2.65 diff and Piggyback. I don‘t think the piggyback killed the engine because I had the pressure issues before that. The injectors I am using are only 440cc Siemens DEKA and I noticed that at 1 bar they were ate 95-100% duty cycle, which is not good, so you can only imagine how it was at 20psi L even though the AFR‘s were ok (and EGT)
So.. in the end.. .my fault that the gasket blew.. live and learn :D
I took the head to the machine shop.. no cracks, pressure tested, resurfaced and valve seats cleaned. I cleanded the pistons and block and got ready for install.
I also had the back exhaust manifold resurfaced since I had a minor leak on cyl 5 since the begining.
Even if I have no experience or qualifications I decided to continue the work.. so I proceded with the valve adjustments which is not easy when you dont have the special tool.
As I said before I was using the MLS 0.070 gasket, but I am going with the OEM BMW this time around.
I had a spare AJUSA HG and compared to the OEM, but in the end I whent with the OEM.

There will be other modifications this time around. I have put some heat deflectors and heat wraps on the downpipes.
I will also be installing brand new and flow matched RC 750ccīs along with a standalone knock detector/warning

I have no idea if the heat shields on the airbox and wraps on downpipes yield any results.
Preparing for install

In the end I had to remove the front manifold, it would not fit, and install after the head was on.

Happy camper!!!!!!!
ARP‘s installed and torque started.

Im hoping that im not screwing this up.. Anyway... ARP specifies 105feet-lbs which is around 142nm and that is alot, strangely enough I do not have the 2x90° procedure. I went to 40nm (double checked) then to 70nm, then 100nm and finally to 142nm, waiting 12hours between torques. Im going to retorque tomorrow before I install the cams.
ITB‘s in place!

Thermostat and housing, oil feed and drain to turbos, ICV and other minor stuff hooked up, downpipes attached to the exhaust, charge pipes to Intercooler and cold air to turbos all donw.

Tomorrow I will install the camshafts and vanos, do a secound round of the valve adjustments, install the cooling system and airbox, the new set of Denso Iridium plugs, Castrol Edge 10w-60 along with some distilled water for the first heat cycle. Hopefully it will start.
Not to overcomplicate and add stuff to go wrong, I will start using the 440cc‘s and then upgrade. After the install the car will be re-tuned.
As I said.. first time pulling the top end, and first time install..
