so winter is coming up and that means its time to do some bodywork, and one of the big issues im having is whether to paint the black trim that wraps around the car or just remove it and shave it smooth. I've seen lots that have painted over but not many shaves. discuss.

Trim serves a purpose and can be replaced/repainted.

I just noticed one of my cars has the oem trim and my white car has what appears to be sanded down smooth trim?

I will say this, I like the trim left black. As for leaving it with the texture intended, my blue car takes some maintenance (as in back to black) to retain the black look or it turns grey after a few weeks. The smooth texture on my white car also looks really good. I will post some pics later tonight provided this Hurricane Earl business stays off shore.

I would say leave the trim black!

If it aint broke, don't fix it.

That said, what do your rims look like? My winter project is redoing my rims to get rid of the curb marks the PO left me.

95' is smooth and later models are textured.

Either way, dont screw with either one.

Leave it alone. Painting the trim only looks decent on a black car

well i either want to go all black, or artic white(why do bimmers look so much better white than other cars?) alright guys was just looking for some feedback, haven't seen anyone with the trim shaved off, thats why i thought to asked, apparently that is a sin, so thanks for the warning. @E36BMW3series My rims look great! mainly because i already fixed all the curb rash though, did that last winter. This year i'm aiming for a bigger project. there's a write-up on bimmerdiy.com to fix curb rash I did, works fine as long as you paint your rims as i did.

Oh, thanks! I was wondering about that as the 95' looked oem! No, definitely no plans on changing mine

I'd wait on that project. Soon enough, there will be something mechanical that deserves more attention, if there isn't a mechanical issue already on some part of the car.

I prefer the stock black trim. Go with what you like & enjoy your car!

Leave it black. If yours is worn out you could try some "Back to Black" black plastic freshener, or try some of the rub-on oils designed to bring black plastic back to life.

Or replace them all with new OEM pieces.

I agree with what most people here said. Leave it black.
