I got an e-mail from the BMW dealer that my 2009 335i sedan needs to be brought in for a software update recall. They say it will take 4-6 hours to complete and that it "helps with running diagnostic codes should your vehicle break down. It is not harmful to drive in any way. " Anybody else get this notice or know what it is? I searched this site, BMW USA, and the government NHTSA sites and didn't see anything.

Any recalls or service bulletins from BMW will come directly from BMW. If it is from the dealer, then I would be suspicious, very suspicious that they want you in there to sell you another car while you are waiting for this "service".

Have not heard of that one, though apparently a number of dealers are sending letters about the HPFP reprogramming "service action" (not a recall). There is new software that supposedly helps prevent HPFP failure that the dealer is supposed to install anytime they see a customer vehicle for service.

Some dealers are doing it proactively, it appears.

Please note that email is being used by dealers to do everything with these cars. If you have BMW Assist, the car tells the dealer who then sends you email. Same for service bulletines - BMWNA tells the dealers who then send email; probably people that don't reply get letters.

I would demand a loaner.

I did not get any type of notice, but when my car was in a few weeks ago for an unrelated issue they updated the software, but it took so long that I had to leave it overnight and get a rental (they were out of loaners). I haven't noticed a difference.

I brought my car in this morning for the software update(I did get a loaner). The SA referred to it as a recall and said it was to address long crank starts related to the HPFP. My car (2009 335i) has never had this issue and hopefully it won't.
