So, I have a 2007 335i, 45,200 miles. Obviously, the service light went red, and into the dealer she went.

Dropped her off yesterday morning, 8:00 am for 9:10 appointment.

10:02: They begin working on the car. Change spark plugs, oil, some silencer, brake fluid, a few filters.
11:58: Finished.

4:00 pm: Pick up car. Drive car home.

Immediately I start noticing differences. The car feels a bit more powerful, it no longer locks when I start moving, the mirrors are set wrong, and a few other small things.

4:32: Get home. Change.

5:01: Head to gym.

Miles drive from dealership at this point: 16

5:45: I head home. I pull out of the parking lot, step on the gas a bit. The rear wheels spin... :confused

I straighten the car out on the straight away and accelerate at half throttle... then the car shakes, the power goes *poof* (like I hit a damn wall), and the service engine light comes on.

I called the dealer, they said to bring the car back. So I drove back 13 miles to the dealer, shaking, vibrating, power comes and goes... dropped it off with them.

They tried to give me a mini for a loaner. :mad

I politely explained to the guy that I probably wouldn't even fit in a mini... so they gave me a 328i with a manual tranny :redspot.

So, one question:

wtf?

HPFP bug bit you.

on the n54 engine, a number of things can cause this. It is likely not the fuel pump, however. HPFP problems almost always begin with difficulty starting. Almost always. Not every failure is the pump, but that is first symptom to look for. Other issues that may cause this:
1. Misfire on a cylinder. Look to injector(s). Many injectors go bad, and this can be a software issue as well. Make sure you have the latest software flash.
2. Cam shaft ledges worn.
3. Excessive carbon build up on tops of valves.
4. Turbo wastegates have excessive play, causing a turbo boost failure code
5. Bad gas, but more and more unlikely
6. Software upgrade needed
7. Pinched hoses for wastegate solenoid actuators.
8. rule out new plugs... you have them. Dealers were not informed of plug change interval, and in the E92 series the interval is not on the NAV menu nor in the manual. Proper interval is plus or minus 40k.

I have a 07 335i, MT, sport, premium with 121k. Original fuel pump. Dinan S2. Turbos, waste gates and all hardware and plumbing replaced at 120k. I have been through each of these issues. Had my valves cleaned at 45k. Shell 93 almost exclusively, although we are finding that it too sometimes has ethanol content as high as 17%. These problems are the same in other vehicles with the N54 engine, for example some of the 5 series.

You really need the code(s) that the dealer will read. The problem is that multiple causes result in the same failure...engine goes into limp mode with reduced power output. Often can be reset my simply restarting the engine, but the failure codes can still be read by the dealer. Stay with it, change dealers if needed. NA is very aware of the multiple possible causes of these issues, and has begun to replace turbos. Good luck.

Got the car back this morning.

Problem was Cylinder misfire. I read the report on the repair, no kidding:

"coil pack was diffacult to remuve. Found crack causing mis-fire."

The guy I asked explained that when they changed the plugs, one of the tech's had cracked the rubber part of the coil pack when removing it, and the additional movement (or "play") because of the crack led to problems causing the cylinder misfires. They replaced it and the car is running like a champ now.

Phew, that must be a relief for you. Sorry for scaring you like that.
