We took the 2008 328i coupe on vacation from SoCal to Oregon. We drove a total of 2500 miles and got 25.8 mpg on the trip, which included everything from 80 mile per hour cruising to stop and go, along with probably a 100 miles or so of twisty Hwy 1 coming back down the coast. Problems - 0.
Impressions, the coupe performed wonderfully and was a pleasure to drive, although over 7 hours in the saddle at a stretch got a little tiresome. The car handled extremely well through the twisties, felt well anchored on the highway and is very intuitive to drive in general. It is great for making U turns when you are lost, which happened to me a lot on this trip.
Sports mode on the auto trans works great in the mountains, you don't really need to use the shift paddles unless you just feel you have to do it. The trunk space was plenty adequate for the two of us and when we picked up extra cargo on the trip, putting down the back seats gave us plenty of extra space for hauling the stuff.
I took my car cover but never used it. I did spend a fair amount of time cleaning bugs off the car and cleaning the windshield. I also spent a lot of time cleaning brake dust off the wheels, too. So be sure to take a good glass cleaner like Stoner's Invisible glass, spray mist for the finish, like Adams or Meguires, and plenty of microfiber rags, if you are an OCD owner like me, and you will have a great trip in your Bimmer too.
