Hey everyone,

im going to be buying my first BMW 328i in a month or so.. I've been looking around and found a lot of nice ones, but none of them have the navigation built in.

So my question is, if i were to purchase one without the navigation built in.. do you know if i can take it to a BMW dealership and get the navigation unit installed? im talking about the one that shows info about the car and all that, not the cheap garmin one.

If anyone knows, let me know.

Thanks!

If the dealership charges $2000 for a pair of headlight, I'm guessing they'll be charging hell of lot more for nav system since it will require requiring disassembling dashboard and installing nav dash and such. then again.... im new to bimmers too

Unfortunately, the answer is no. The dashboard itself is completly different, and I believe that the wiring harness is different, too.

I am pretty sure that the nav needs to be installed at the factory.....I have it in my car (2010 328xi) and its a major part of the dashboard. If the dealer could install it my guess is that it would cost a small fortune.

Hell...even the BMW alarm system needs to be installed at the factory. If you decline the alarm system at the time you build the car they do not include the wiring harness so you cannot install it at a later date!

My recommendation is if you are buying a new car custom configure it and get it the way you want. You will have to wait but you can order the options that you want. That is what I did and it was worth the wait.:buttrock

If you are asking for a complete iDrive retrofit, then I must agree that if it is in fact even possible, it would be too damn costly to be worth it. Not to mention that if you were to run into software or electronic gremlins after the install, then your life would be hellish trying to recover from that with a non factory unit.

buy the car you want, not one that is "close"... it's not like 3-series are rare in California...

Yeah, I'm not sure why the OP is having difficulty. It looks like more than half of the 3-series here have nav systems based on my peek-in-window-when-walking-by method of surveying... :)
