Using a pre-97 328 auto tranny in a 97 328

Hi all. Need to replace a bad transmission in a 97 328. I am finding the auto tranny in a 97 328 is not the same part number as pre 97's. The only thing I am able to source so far is a 96. It would seem logical that I could use a pre-97 tranny if I also use the pre-97 tranny compute, and perhaps I might need the driveshaft too.

Can someone validate that this can be done based on fist hand experience?
