View Full Version : Almost money-shifted---WHEW!!

Quick one:
As I was passing a clueless driver that picked the wrong turn lane, I shifted from 3rd to 2nd at around 60MPH. I was slipping the clutch back out (still driving somewhat gently) when I felt the car start to slow down. I heard the revs pick up and I realized what I had done as I still had my foot on the cluth pedal. I quickly put it into 4th and checked the tach. I only hit 6000 RPMs. WHEW!!! That was a close one! :emo I guess 60MPH in 2nd won't shoot beyond 7k, but still, I scared myself.
Anyone else catch themselves in the middle of a money-shift?

I think we almost all have.... I know however it's just your subconscious brain at work trying to give you an excuse to put that s50b30 in your car :).

That's because 328s have 2.93 diffs, '96+ M3s have 3.23 diffs.
Factoring that with your 6500@64MPH ...
(3.23/2.93) x 6500 = 7165RPM@ 64MPH for a M3

Quick question: Do you have the stock tranny mounts?

I was workin' a guy pretty hard at my 1st DE at Thunderhill. I was a little hesitant, but my instructor was urging me on and giving me confidence. There was no question I had more power than the car in front of me. But, he was probably doing a better job of driving. I finally got out of a fairly tight turn onto the straight and my instructor says "gas it!". So I do. And I'm winding it up in 2nd, pulling up beside this guy, and go for the shift to 3rd. I'm really excited. This will be my 1st pass. I'm feelin' like a real race car driver. This is awesome. I shift to 5th! The car falls on it's nose. I'm laughing my a$$ off. What a dumby.
Fortunately for me, it wasn't the money shift. Only the gomer shift.

i absolutely hate those 2nd to 5th shifts!!! DOH!!!
For me they happen at the worst times too.

be thankful that you didnt moneyshift james. Pray to whomever you believe in... cause that would have been easily a 5k disaster

Try shifting with finger tips or try backhanding the 3rd to 4th, the gearbox does not really want to go from 5th to 2nd or 3rd to 2nd without an increase or change of resistance.
The worst thing that happens with the finger tip method is you completely miss a gear as the shifter bounces off the gate and you end up bouncing off the rev limiter. Embarassing on the track or spirted street situation, but far less expensive than that S50B30 conversion that most of us dream about....
Just my .02c, count your blessings as YMMV.
