Problems?

1) new found "squeal" coming from front of car.

Details: I attempted to do rule outs. It is rpm related, does not go away in neutral or park. Doesnt really make the noise at idle but touch the gas and it sounds off. Sounds like a sqealing bearing to me, its got that raspy metal scraping sound. Orginally I thought that maybe it was a catylytic converter coming apart or losing a shield.... it was that kind of noise, like metal rubbing or vibrating on other metal.

It does not make any additional noise while turning the steering wheel from lock to lock. Im guessing the steering pump is ruled out.

It does not make any additional noise turning on the air conditioning. Im guessing that rules out the ac pump.

I grabbed the fan and attempted to "wiggle" it up and down and in/out. No real noticeable play. Hard to say that its the water pump but still a candidate.

Low coolant level came up on dash twice in the last couple days. I topped off the expansion tank with a half quart of fluid and then the other half quart. No noticeable leaks of coolant or any oil leaks. Stumped on that part. Wiped exhaust out after condensation drip and it stayed dry. No white steam coming from exhaust and no milky look on dipstick when checking oil level.

Best guess? Idler pulleys or water pump. Im unsure and hope some of you have some tips for additional rule outs. If I have to take the water pump out, I might as well redo the entire front of the engine so Im not having to go back in. Thats several parts and costly Im sure.

2) Front passenger AC fan does not work. Its been like this since I bought it. I can turn the drivers side all the way up and it works fine. If I turn up the front passenger side, it sounds like it turns up more but nothing comes from vents up on that corner. Backs work fine.

Question on this system. There are two flapper valves on the firewall side of the engine bay. the passenger side is closed and the drivers side is slightly ajar. Not sure if that is what feeds the vent system and or if there is a way to find the blower motor to check it?

3) clicking noise from what sounds like a rear head rest. I have yet to investigate this issue, but Id like to hear some ideas. I dont even know if they are supposed to move or anything by motor. I just hear it clicking and whirring when I initially start the car.

Thats the first three problems I have and want to fix. Anyone with ideas please chime in.

The best way to find a faulty bearing at the front end is to remove the serpentine belt and give each of the moving parts a spin. The bearings usualy show as faulty by a rough feel or difficult to turn. The belt can be pushed out of the way without removing any other parts, use two wrenches to remove the pressure from the tensioners (V8 shown, V12 similar:

Thanks for the response.

I figure that being this car has 140+ on it, I might as well put the pump in it too.

Looked at the local autoparts store and I dug up this:

Cordone reman water pump $250
Beck/Arnley new water pump $400

Is the cordone reliable? it come with a limited lifetime warranty the beck comes with a 1 year warranty.

Gates "BLUE" series belts $38 each.
Gates tensioners. $75 each

What im not sure about is if the tensioners are manual or hydraulic. They have 2 part number for them. I took a peek, looks manual of some sorts but I have never touched one before.

Fan clutch from HAYDEN $150

No find on an aftermarket fan blade

Cant find all the hoses to replace off the bat either.

I wish I had the extra cash to kill a sweet aluminum radiator but I dont.......boo!

I did the pump myself in April OEMBIMMERPARTS.com has the pump for 250, and the thermostat for 70ish. They give you all the orings ( except for the coolant line to the trans cooler connection ). I did buy the harmonic balancer tool, and the tool for the ft main seal ( installation only ). Not bad, but I took my time. There is a good set of instructions on bimmerboard for this. My pump was leaking from the shaft seal at 130K.

thanks for the info, Ill peek at them.

Im doing the pump purely out of preemptive strike. If Im going to have the stuff off, why not do it while Im in there? Just makes sense considering its got 142 on it.

Anyone have any source to help me figure out why my front passenger blower motor apparently doesnt work? I need to see where its at and how I can switch the leads so I can see if its the motor or the controls. Im saying motor.

Oh and the two flapper valves in the firewall..........where do they go to? are they feeding my ventilation system?

The noise in the back could be the headrest if you have the seat belts clicked and you start the car the headrests will move upon their own.

If that is the case you may have a broken part as in the pictures below. You could unlatch the seatbelt (if they are latched) and that should keep the headrests from moving at all on start up.

Had the same issue on my car and got a front head rest motor as the rear one was harder to find at the time and scavenged the piece I needed. You may find that someone has one now that you can pick up as an entire unit and would make life easier.

Hope this helps.

you might as well do the valley pan and valve covers while you are in there...

IIRC the intake has to come off for the WP.... or maybe that's just the v12....someone can correct me if i cam wrong

The intake does NOT have to come off to do the WP on a V12. The web instructions I saw are doing both the intake and the pump, so it implies both, but they are 2 separate tasks.

Thanks for the heads up.... Unfortunately the intake does have to come off to replace the coolant vent pipe.... which is one of my issues...:(

Problem is that my seatbelts arent latched. Im going to have to get back into the back seat and listen. Hard to do when I have to turn the key on to hear it going.

One of the rear seat rests seems to be in an up position though. I thought they were just manually adjusted.

Hmmm..........

crap on a cracker! The oem bimmerparts stuff is cheaper with a radiator than me buying them at the local autoparts store without one.

I may have to just pony up! I still need those idler pulleys though.

You mean the small rubber\metal hose with a "T" in it? I changed mine without removing the intake. Few 4 letter words but not too bad. I took some pics, will see if I can find them. You will need a monster impact gun to take off the balancer bolt. I used a Harbor Freight "Earthquake" at 120PSI. Took 4 or 5 minutes before it gave up.

Does the harmonic balancer have to come off for me to put the water pump?

It would make your life a lot easier if you did.
