Hi guys,
I got a stupid question. My carrier bearing finally went totally bad on my 97 M3 5 speed stick. I bought a 99 M3 driveshaft but it is a 4 bolt. My 97 has a 6 bolt. I thought I heard that a 4 bolt driveshaft will bolt up to a 6 bolt flange? Can someone confirm this before I take it all apart? Thanks! Please email me!!! Thanks!

I don't think so.... I think you're going to need another driveshaft, or another output flange on the diff.

Hi John,
Your probably right. This sucks! I had a 99 one fedexed overnight to me and it is a 4 bolt. Oh well~

You can replace the center bearing, no problem. Part number 25 12 2 227 278.

Hi James,
Is that the number for the 97 driveshaft? I think the carrier bearings are different. How hard are they to replace?

I used a 97 M3 coupe 5-speed for the search. Give me the last 7 of your VIN and the catalog will definitely give you the correct part. The ETK did not specify there was a changeover in the center bearing part numbers through the years.

EE05401 It is a Sedan if that matters. How hard is the carrier bearing to replace?

Same part number.

You have to remove the driveshaft, mark the orientation (to preservce proper balance), slide the front and rear halves apart, then use a puller to remove the old bearing. Slide the new bearing while only tapping or pressing on the inner race only. I do not see a snap ring in there, so it's merely a light press fit.

You can also look in the yelow pages for a place that rebuilds and balances driveshafts. They'll be able to do it in no time if you don't feel up to the task. Save $$ by removing it and bringing it to them.
