However, before anyone gets too excited, I have the clutch master cylinder out of the car, so I haven't been able to drive it yet. :(

The good news is that while the engine was turning over before the fuel pump pushed the fuel all the way to the engine, the compression sounded really good, and it started up and idled fine right away. The only weird noise was the lifters clacking away.

I gave the engine a few minutes to warm up, burn off all the oil and residues, and then proceeded to bleed the coolant system on both the TS and the engine. My first impression of the engine is that there is a nice SC whine, nothing obnoxious, but you can tell it's not NA. It does seem louder than I remember. After letting it warm up, I did rev the engine a few times, and was impressed at how quickly the boost gauge moves, when you are goosing the throttle, you almost can't see the needle snap from vacuum to boost, exceedingly instant.

As for concerns, he main question I have, is that even after about ten minutes, the lifters all seemed to be tapping pretty bad still. How long does it take for the lifters to pump up? I started the engine with the oil that had been in the car while it sat the last 1.5 years, but after turning the engine off, have since changed the oil to a petroleum based 5w-20. My intention is just to run that oil for ~50 miles and then change it to the usual synthetic, hopefully washing any crud or assembly grease out with the 5w-20. I have yet to start the car up with the 5w-20, but how long should I wait for the lifters to pump up before I should be concerned? Should I add any ATF or additives to the oil to help clean it all out?

Anyway, I'm super excited that I should have the car completed tomorrow, and be able to post my first impressions (I suspect my rear tires are going to lose a handful of 32nd's tomorrow).

I believe the method for 'bleeding' the lifters is to hold the engine at a constant 3500rpms for 10-15 seconds. repeat this a few times and they should quiet right down.

I'd also use a thicker oil.

In my experience, if you have a ticking lifter like that - shut it down, lets things settle for 5-10 seconds, and re-start. It'll usually go away, sometimes takes 1-2 trys.

Congrats!

I'd drain the 5-20 and refill w/ 15-50. Then, ohold the revs at 2500 rpm until the lifters pump up - this can take a lil while sometimes.

I dont understand the wisdom of using the 5-20 oil.
