I was fixing an air leak on my car and have always wondered what the little plastic box which connects to the intake just after the MAF does?

Is it to quieten the intake down?

Yes

And to generate questions to give Ice something to do.... ;)

You can remove it and plug it, it will give you a little more sound from the throttle.

It's the "Intake Resonator".

As to WHAT does it do.....your guess would be as good as mine. :)

I cut mine off and capped off the hole with a piece of ABS plastic. Can't say it made any effect either way, good or bad.

One of the reason's I asked is the rubber tube which connect the resonator to the intake boot is slips off every once in a while. So now I will just cap it off.

Its main purpose is to even out the gulps of air the engine takes at tick-over. The uneven airflow gives an undulating output from the MAF which makes accurate airflow measurement difficult. The resonator is tuned for 3KHz which is the 'gulp frequency' (for want of a better word) of the engine a tick-over. It damps the pressure waves and allows a more accurate airflow measurement!

Does it make a difference? No, probably not!

Timm, Edwin and Qsilver designed the E38, did you not know this?

Gentlemen,

Even though is possible to tune a small box to a 3 kHz resonating frequency, I don't think the Q of such resonating system could have any considerable effect. Also 3Khz is a relatively high pitched note. Weird.
