View Full Version : Obnoxious interior door noises

I have been trying to make my car as silent as possible. I did full dynamat on the trunk, doors and the rear of the car. I didn't do the front as the front section of carpet is a pain to remove and already has like 3-4 in.'s of foam on it.

I just have the annoying door noise in the front driver and rear passenger when I go over major potholes/bumps downtown. It seems to either be the strikers or the outer seal. My driver outer seal is worn/torn away right where the driver is and the rears are shrunk a bit so that could be part of it but I am leaning towards strikers as it sounds more like a plastic type of sound than vinyl/rubber. I could be wrong though. You know how noises are....

I tried adjusting the strikers but it doesn't seem to help. Tried putting silicone on the rubber seals and that doesn't really seem to help either. I am thinking of getting a new driver seal and and then cutting the others and using pieces of the used driver to fill the gaps under the sill plates.

I have put dynamat on the inside and interior outer side of the doors. Also re-glued any broken clip holders with 2 part epoxy so the door panels themselves are solid.

I was thinking of buying new strikers as well. I imagine that they could be worn over time and have room to flex.

Any other ideas of what it could be?

I had an annoying squeak in my driver's door that was barely noticable, but if you knew the car you heard it.

I replaced the striker with a good used one from a rear door and it went away. My striker was visibly broken in spots.

Also, recently when I had the door panel off I could hear a few rattles/squeaks that went away once the panel was back on. Probably either I just don't her them now, or the pressure from the seal on the door prevents the squeaks.

I'd go with a new door seal, and try swapping the driver's door striker with a rear door and see if it gets better. They're all the same.

Next up for me, finding the rattle in the hatch area. And killing it.

Dynamat the hell out of it.

That might help. More than likely I just need to get the junk out of the trunk. Then put it back one piece at a time. My toolkit lid is also busted, I've glued the hinge once and it broke again. This time I think I'll try fiberglass.

I hate rattles.

I'll bet the doors aren't closing tight enough. Collapsed or torn weather strips, worn or misadjusted door strikes.
Push on the door from the outside and see how much it gives.
