It's 100 degrees here in DC today, and my car's running out of gas. I pull up to a gas station, tap the filler door- and it won't open. Apparently that little locking bar won't retract! I wait a few minutes while fumbling around with my phone trying to find the number for BMW service in Arlington, then return, and the door has finally opened. I filled the tank, closed the door, and drove home. I checked the door once more after parking, and again- the door won't open. Hopefully this is just the hot weather, but it didn't happen last year in Sacramento despite some 117 degree days.

Anyone else have this problem?

After reading a few threads I realized something- I locked the doors before going to open the filler door. This is something I've never done before. Hopefully it was just the locking mechanism connected to the doors that prevented opening the filler door.

I think that will do it!

lock the doors, you've locked the fuel filler door. Also, be aware there is an aux. method to open the fuel door from inside the trunk. Consult your owner's manual.

When you lock the doors with a keyfob or key, your fuel door will lock as well. It's a security feature to prevent people from stealing gas.
