I've heard that the 5 speed is preferred over the automatic, does the automatic have issues? What kind of gas mileage can I expect? Both cars are around 130-150k which is pretty low for the year, most for sale are over 200k.

Everything in running order, expect around 25mpg highway.

The 5-speed is preferred for simplicity, reliability and the fact that it makes living with M50 power levels in the heavy E34 body much more enjoyable.

130K-150K is good mileage for the year. Mine was 143K when I got it. Note that there are differences between '94s and '95s, as well—'95s got body-colored lowers, wide kidney grilles, a nicer steering wheel and door panels and a few other knick knacks.

You have to go 95 5-speed. I wanted a V8 when I bought my E34 (so that doesn't apply to you) but I had to have a 95. The wide grille, gathered leather door panels, and M-Tech sills make it for me.

If the auto trans hasn't been replaced at 140k miles, you can expect that it will likely need it relatively soon.

A 5-speed might need a clutch at some point, but that's a $1k job, not a $3-$5k trans job.
