So yesterday me and my dad changed a wheel bearing in my e36, we were told it would take a little elbow grease to take the hub out, well, it just fell onto my dads lap to reveal half of a wheel bearing, then we realized the hub was ruined so we took a trip to greensboro to get a new hub from a very nice guy who sat it out on the back deck of the store and told us to place th money there. Well we got back home and started working again, (after some pizza). We started at 4 and stopped at 10.
I really hope we dont have to do that again for a while..
Heres a pic of the shot hub and bearing...

Ignore the sunflower seed, my dad loves them.

Those seeds are causing the bearings to wear out. Too much extra weight.

I feel your pain. I've changed 6 rear wheel bearings and hubs on my car since I've owned it, and it is a pain. However, I always encounter something you found, but few others see. You needed to replace your hub because it was damaged. I've needed to do the same for all my wheel bearing jobs. Here's my story: http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1215065

Any ideas why this is happening?

That is odd. I have done several wheel bearings also and have only had to replace the hub along with the bearings twice (on 2 different cars). Both were on e46's and both looked like this one. I think water somehow got in between the race and hub causing rust allowing the race to spin? There is major pitting on the hub and race.
