Tisher BMW (getBMWparts.com) is a dealer that runs internet sales...they sell a compact spare tire kit (wheel, tire, jack, wheel chock, lugwrench and a foam core accessory tray that fits neatly in the wheel). $275 shipped to lower 48. I bought BMW tire tote (cover pk of 2 for $20) and a HD flat bungee type cord to secure the tire tight against the rear seat in between rear cargo tie downs. You can still get decent sized stuff (case o wine) into the trunk on top of spare and of course still have about a foot+ behind the spare. I bet more folks will go this way once they find out that "run flat" doesn't mean you can drive 100+ miles home on Sunday evening...official range without air isn't much if you have full car! I'm not keen on trying to find a BMW run flat on a weekend...bet outside of big cities you're SOL if you either have too far to go, or hit something real bad and damage a tire so that its not driveable..RFT or not!

I have been researching spare tires for my 2007 BMW 328xi wagon. I wanted good tires for driving in snow conditions in the mountains and wasn't sure about RFT's as a solution.

So I bought a set Contential DWS for my running tires and got a spare wheel for when I am not in the city. The tire size of my car is 225/45R17

The spare wheel for the BMW E60 (2004-2010) fits the BMW. The kit is sold by trademotion.com (http://www.trademotion.com/partlocator/index.cfm?action=MorePartInfo&PartID=766537&siteid=214672&catalogid=4462) and by http://www.bavauto.com. However, I searched for a E60 spare tire kit from Ebay. The kit includes one steel wheel with 125/80 R17 tire, a BMW OEM jack, wheel chock, lug wrench and foam to hold it in place

When I did the calculations, a set of RFT's would cost ($212x4)=848+tax+fitting, where as the normal tires were (4x$115)+$250=$710+tax+fitting for the spare tire kit. If ever I have to replace a tire, it will be even cheaper.

I mounted the wheel to check the clearance, ran the full steering lock and took it around the car park a few times. Everything seemed file.

So my plan is to buy a tote for it so I can put it in the car when required for long trips out of the city. I am planning to buy this carry bag (http://new.minimania.com/InvDetail.cfm?item=G2NMW7660&googlebase)

I hope this info helps other people wanting to remove RFT tires from their BMW.

Nokian have most of their tyres with Runflat option. I didnt brought that option, that cost nearly $400 more on a set of Hakka 7, but i just let you know!

Vincent --

Will your donut spare tire kit work with a 2011i x-drive? My reading of the manual seems to indicate that you wouldn't want to use a tire smaller than the other three on an x-drive? Or is it OK temporarily? I also don't love the idea of the run-flat tires and no spare. Thanks

Hi
The spare is meant to be used TEMPORARILY only, to get you out of a dangerous situation. with that being said, the outer diameter is 25.5 inches (the stock tires are 25 inches) which is within the 2% range of error according to the tire industry.

I need new tires on my 2007 328i Sedan. I am thinking of getting new wheels with regular tires; not run flat.

If i do that, will one of the old wheel and tire fit in the trunk space to suffice as a spare?

Has anyone tired this.

Thanks.

Depending on which size wheel/tire you have, it will take a HUGE chunk of your trunk and make it less usable. Feasibility depends on how much you need that trunk space and how you use it. For most people who use their cars as a DD, I'd assume it would be a no go.

I really do not see why not, but you are going to loose a lot of space.... hence the preference of the space saver spare :)

Thanks. I will try out the spare tire in trunk thing for a while and if it becomes and inconvenience I can get the spare tire kit.

I have the 16 inch wheels stock wheel and run flat tire on there now. My intent is to move up to 17's with staggered tires 225/45/17 and 255/40/17 (non run flat). Any advice either way on this? (my vehicle is 2007 328i Sedan base model). Thanks again.

moving up to 17s with staggered rims certainly will be much nicer, just make sure the tires fit and won't rub :) you will feel more grip, but of cause ride quality will decrease a little, but again, you are not going to like 19s or something :)

They emailed me back with this...

"OEM BMW E60 5 Series Emergency Wheel/Tire Set. We've reassembled the kit 36110308889 with the exact components it originally came with as pn 36110308889 is now discontinued and no longer available. Set includes genuine BMW: space saver wheel and tire (NOT mounted/balanced), oddments tray, articulated car jack, jack crank, wedge, and bracket. *This set ships at a 50.00 flatrate within the US. **Using this wheel/tire set on any other vehicle than an E60/61 5 Series is at your own risk. (yes, this is the kit that seems to work great on the E9x 3 Series vehicles!) ***The BMW trunk cargo net is also available on special and goes nicely with this set."

I looked into a compact spare when I moved to normal tires. I determined that where I drive (on the highway, to and from work), it's safer to just call my insurance (free roadside assistance) tow truck and have them tow me back home. Who wants to take their life in their hands by changing a tire at night, on the road?

Yes, that's the basic idea behind RFT's...

I have the donut spare but it's really not that much more useful than the RFTs. I have it for the same reason - non-RFT winter tires - but I think that for long road trips I'd feel better with a 17" wheel with a full sized tire. That way I can also store my jumper cables etc. inside the wheel and get back some of my trunk space. just my thoughts. A real spare is the only thing that will save you if you get a flat >50 miles from a tire store or dealership and you don't want to wait for roadside assistance as neither the donut or RFTs are guaranteed to work longer than that.

Hi Vincent.
Will this fit a 2011 328 convertable, so the top can still fold into the trunk?

I run non-RFTs and carry a Slime Tire Repair Kit. This one: http://www.amazon.com/Slime-SS-PDQ-06-15-Minute-Emergency/dp/B00062ZIRC/ref=sr_1_cc_1?s=aps&ie=UTF8&qid=1363964024&sr=1-1-catcorr&keywords=slime+tire+repair

It fits in the compartment under the trunk floor, so I lose no space. Haven't needed to use it yet. Hopefully, never will.

Cheers!
