hi,
i have a Mini with a manual transmission that has been making loud sputtering noises. when i give it gas, it literally putts and sputters before it takes off. i have taken it to the dealership 3 times and they claim it's fixed, which it is for a couple months, then it returns. they say they changed the chain tensioner one time. another time, just putting oil in the car stopped the noise (btw, no oil light or check engine light came on; in fact, the computer said there was 11,000 miles before service was required. i checked the oil and found it was almost nothing, so I put oil in it). sometimes, the noise stops when the car warms up. other times, it just continues. right now, it's not making the loud noises, but it's idling rough and there is a very low, constant noise when i give it gas. i fear something is really wrong with my car, and it only has 27,000 miles on it. i was told by someone at the dealership on my last visit that Mini knows about this problem but is not recalling the cars. He said that when the cars are taken on long, non-stop drives, it burns about 1 quart of oil every 750 miles. the last time the noise increased was during/after a long road trip. has anyone had similar problems or heard any such news? if so, was it fixed and how was it fixed?
sorry to join the forum on a negative note, but I was referred here after telling my story to a friend.
any info is helpful. thanks so much!!!

If under warranty just leave it at the dealer, tell them you are not comfortable driving it until they get something resolved.

Take it to a dealer who knows how to properly measure the timing chain.
If the chain is not within spec, and the vehicle has not had the TSB timing chain(and related parts) repair done yet, get that done soon.
