hey, since i'm here. can a bad ball joint cause steering issues? like scary ones? i replaced one of my struts and the lower ball joint would not tighten down all the way, it would just spin and spin....and spin. i said screw it, because i didn't have a spare, nor any time. but i hit a few large bumps, and now it's scary to drive.

Yes a bad ball joint can cause wonderful steering wheel movement. Did you check the ball joint by hand already?

not really. the car has been sitting in the driveway for a couple of weeks now. i'll get to it one of these days, but i was really just trying to get a feel for what im in for. i think i may have damaged the ball joint when i changed out the strut. i had new control arms installed less than a year ago, but i didn't have a pickle fork handy when i changed out the strut. i think i may have damaged it..

Stick you head under, sometimes you can see if the rubber boot broke. If not you'll have to jack it up (check the tie rod end then too).

i did tear open the boot, but i didnt realize that lead to immediate failure.. maybe i just destroyed it. tie rods were done when the control arm was done, so less than a year ago. but that's just my luck. i tend to break stuff when i work on the thing. :rofl i'll have it checked out though by a buddy. thanks for the replies.

If you get a ball joint that just spins taking it off or putting it on. Get your jack put a hockey puck or similar spacer on the Jack pad. Put right under the ball joint and jack the car up with all its weight on the ball join till its just off the jack stand that's closest to which ever one you are working on.
