View Full Version : CPO - sound right?

Hi, all.
I'm a newbie, so please forgive if I don't do this right. I just bought a 2007 335i from my local BMW dealership. The car has lots of mileage (53000), but came with a maintenance agreement through 2012. It is a CPO car. Well, here is the deal: I purchase last Friday, but it is a car they have in the back and not yet ready for test-driving (which I thought might be good). They got it from a sister dealer in Alabama. Anyway, they take until late Monday to wait for a second key to be mailed (and it doesn't arrive). I still go pick it up and plan for key to be mailed. While going over features in the idrive and all that, the salesman and I see that the reading light housing isn't a good fit, but not really commented on. I begin driving off with a terrible creaking sound (pet peeve - especially for a sedan). I push on dashboard and whatnot trying to resolve it and finally push in the reading light console thing and noise stops, but still not looking like a good fit. Well, showed off my car to a friend and when they got out and closed the passenger door, the whole console thing just fell out dangling by wires and turning on the middle light. GEEZ! So, now in reflecting on scuffs on the wheels (I use rejex and was looking them over and saw this at home), black graphite-like stuff inside trunk lid (on white trunk - car is titanium), and some white gunk on rear rubber around back window, and this thing just falling out and dangling, I'm concerned it wasn't given CPO treatment since they already had a sale. It doesn't help that when salesman and I reviewed the deal, he said I only had maintenance through October of this year until I reminded him that it was supposed to be the reason I chose this car over its twin in the lot. Then he kept pulling up the facts about the other car (which he did several times in the process of me buying the car on Friday while I was there from 11:00 until 3:00). To get confused about it being a CPO car and that it had the maintenance the original owner bought, makes me think again that it wasn't treated like a CPO (which I made sure to buy!). So, my question to you all who have done this before and know the car: Does this sound like the condition a car should be in if it is a CPO car and truly gone over by their people? The salesman said they'd had a lot of turnover in service and some problems getting cars ready lately, but that my car was to have been moved to the top of the list on Friday and possibly be ready Saturday (but the call late Saturday said that he didn't know when the wheel guy would be in, so obviously there was some wheel situation and maybe what I saw when I got home). I'm just feeling a little (a lot) disappointed, especially since I just traded my Porsche Boxster with hard top and perfect condition in for this car which I thought would be even better for future reliability. I love the drive of the car and how I've read raves here, but does this deal seem iffy and how might I proceed from here? Thanks for reading through this long post. I look forward to some advise and do want to love this car.

Wow looks like they didnt CPO it for you. Funny thing is i also sold my Porsche Boxster (with 3.6 911 motor) to get my bimmer which I havent regret at all. My Porsche was falling apart and cost me $23,000 in repairs including the engine. My dealer also got my car from another and CPO'd again bc it was already CPO'd from the other dealer and mine has been in great shape. Take that thing in and complain!

Thanks for your input! This helps me alot since you also had a Porsche! I'll hopefully have them make this right today. Funny - you are in Charleston and believe it or not, I'm right here in Columbia. Didn't expect to see many local or regional folks on here! How long have you now had your 335i? Did your insurance go up? I just found out mine is going up when I thought going from a Boxster to a sedan would mean lower rates, but I guess the speed of this car helps raise those rates. Anyway, if you have any helpful tips about owning this car in SC, I'd sure appreciate it. Thanks a bunch!

I think your thoughts are correct and the car just wasn't gone over too closely before being sold to you. I would bring it back in and make them fix any and all of these issues.

Did you do your research on the 335s, especially early models (2007). I see that you note purchasing for hopes of future reliability. Their track record doesn't point to future reliabilty IMO. In any event, enjoy the car while under CPO warranty and then ditch it.

I didnt catch you were in Columbia, thats cool. Yeah my insurance BARELY went down which amazed me going from a convertible 2 door sports car to a newer more safe BMW, doesnt make sense right? I bought my BMW back in February I believe, its been such a joy especially after tuning it with the JB+ and adding Dual cone intakes. I think I am going to graduate to the JB3 so I could maybe give you a deal on my JB+ if youd like, i can even help you install if you come down here.

Thanks for the input, Steve. Unfortunately, I researched the 328i and did the wrong thing and assumed the 335i would have same reliability since they look the same. Now I see that there could be trouble ahead, though I hope much of it has already been discovered and fixed by first owner. I also just read my inside door panel and have a September (I think) '09 build date, so I guess that could be a double whammy since it is so early. My only consolation is the maintenance agreement, so maybe I need to just use it until then and then hope for a more reliable BMW in my price range. Sometimes, you should buy with your head and I pretty much think I failed to do this here because when I drove the 335 it felt like a much better transition from the Porsche than the 328. Live and learn, but maybe like Charleston335 I can really enjoy this car. Again - I do appreciate the brutal honesty!

Thanks for the offer - I have to do my research to even know what that is (still learning how to use the nav. system and all that, so will add that to my learning curve as well!).

:)
Update - I got my car back at 8:00pm last night and it is cleaned up properly and the reading light housing is very, very well installed now - totally different than how it was when I first brought the car home. The salesperson actually finally said last night that ". . . it shouldn't have happened," so I'm glad he understands. I'm going to love it!
